Update: New START
On December 22, the U.S. Senate voted in strong bipartisan fashion (71-26) to ratify the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) agreement, which will re-establish mutual, on-the-ground verification of American and Russian nuclear arsenals, and cut the deployed strategic weapons on each side by about 1/3.
Now that the votes are cast, we can reflect on what it all means. So what does the ratification of the New START treaty tell us about where we’ve come from, where we are, and what’s next the horizon?
